Since today is my first blog on my kayaking adventures I will give you some background.
My fellow yackers consists of myself, my sister, a girlfriend and my 21 year old daughter.
We just started our adventures this summer as something active and fun to do for chics who love the outdoors.
Today we set out for a fall trip down the Pigeon River in Mongo, Indiana.
We have floated here before but today we put in to the east of the main damn near the Trading Post and headed east. The beginning of our adventure took us down some pleasantly moving rapids to get us started. We floated down with some beautiful fall scenery as the leaves are beginning to turn.
After a ways the rapids slowed to a gentle lake float which required some paddling but nothing too rigorous. As we meandered further east we wound up at the Nasby Damn which requires a small portage. The out access here is very nice and so we decided to take the opportunity to break for lunch. The sound of the damn falling lends a very peaceful and calming back ground effect.
After lunch we took the first of the two accesses for the portage. This access site has a sandy bottom with minimal debris to enter your boats. Pictures in this area at the bottom of the damn offer great selfies and pictures. Rapids in this area move pretty quickly and offer a fun restart to your journey.
As you move further down the river the vegetation and trees tends to thicken a little allowing
for a little rustling noise as the wind comes across the banks. Rapids on this section last a little longer than on the other side. Minimal paddling is needed in this section. Primarily your paddle is hitting the water just for steering. We did hit a few shallow spots that required us to do a little rocking and paddle pushing but nothing that required us to exit our boats and move by hand. The ending of our trip takes us to a section called Mill Pond where two grey herons made it very vocal that they did not like us in their neighborhood. LOL. Our final destination ended just to the east of a wood braced bridge which looked very cool from the underside as we floated under.
Overall this was a great location to enter and exit all the way through.
We will definitely add this to our return list.
